halloween is my least favorite holiday.

thatÕs right. I said it.  bottom of the list. for cryinÕ out loud, I like easter more than halloween and iÕm an atheist. (that easter link goes to half a mix I made last easter while half drunk and half bored). you can hear my mixer die at the end of the mix. speaking of mixes, go down a post and check out HecubusÕ new one. he says it is neuro, which I assume is short for neurological which must mean it has something to do with the science of the brain. here is another mix I made for free distribution at a rave long long ago. yes, itÕs two-step/garage. and yes, I know I am a terrible two-step/garage DJ.

so back to halloween. i am not a fan. as a kid, I was not ÒallowedÓ normal candy; having been brought up on the pseudo-science of the feingold diet, I had restricted access to any foods with processed sugars and artificial ingredients. so when I did have access to these foods, they were wholly unappealing as they tasted either too sweet or too salty. getting candy I thought was abysmal in flavor merely fed my distaste for a holiday where I had to go to the trouble of dressing differently. forget that!

also, I recall moving to wisconsin in 1992ish and taking my brother and sister out trick-or-treating and thinking Òhow in the hell can it possibly be this damn cold already!?Ó that sucked.

anyway, new years eve and july 4 are the bomb holidays for partying. great foods on thanksgiving. great weather during labor and memorial days. christmas feels like christmas, so it rules. halloween? junk.

Did you see the applecrisp?

tonight dre made ÒhealthyÓ eggplant parmesan  and it was yummy. she fudged on the healthy part as I refuse to eat lowfat cheese, so we used buffola mozzarella and parm reg.  lowfat cheese? seriously? it was top notch and we had special guest marie martin in the house to down some wine and watch movies.

got on a conference call for a pyramid schemÉI mean multi-level- marketing ÒopportunityÓ, at the behest of a coworker tonight. while on the call I did a little research and found the company has been sued by two governments for, you guessed it, running a pyramid scheme. after the call I tried to explain to my poor coworker how this was a predatory and only sorta legal way of doing business but I donÕt think she got it.

enjoy  your evening america!

Oh, listening to:

holy crap itÕs windy out today! gorgeous and windy, I was digging it most definitely. went for a run behind my office over lunch. as you can see from this totally sweet spy-plane photo, my office is surrounded by trails, lakes, beaches, and a golf course (what a terrible terrible waste of perfectly good parking space).  almost got blown off a trail.

watching what looks to be a spectacular loss by the vikings.  itÕs hard for me to not like the vikings (in games that do not imperil americaÕs beloved packers). I mean, I live here, and the poor bastards have never won a superbowl. I hate the bears (how can you not, FIBS like themÉwhen theyÕre winning) but itÕs hard to hate something as pathetic as the vikings.

NEW HECUBUS MIX! my d&b homeboy has done it again.

made applecrisp tonight. the video is of itÕs bubbling with cinnamonliciousness.

PACKERS WIN!!!!!

always a good way to start a week. The pass defense still looks like crap (nick barnett should be banned from celebrating until he gets a pick or at least stops a passing play across the middle of the field.), but how about the run! brett favre's first ever lambeau leap!? two backs rushing for over 100 yards!? no turnovers!? hot damn, helluva game.

kickass-american, marie martin, came over earlier this week and totally hooked-up dre on the carving tip.  i'm not a fan of cutting vegetables i will not immediately eat,  but  marie's robo-latern (it looked like a cylon!) was tight as was dre's traditional...uh, smile-o'lantern.

spent the weekend trying to not spend money and did a pretty good job. went out to happy hour with the wife on friday night in uptown. had a couple anchor steams @ stella's then williams' for odd beers  followed by the modern for dinner. noticed rogue buddha has a new show, got a peak in the window post closing time. I had the 12 day smoked pork w/ yams and leeks, she had the chicken w/ truffled-polenta. still our favorite restaurant in the city. consistent. despite all our best intentions to go to either the raekwon show @ the varsity or the other rap show @ the rock-rock-rock, we only managed to find bed.. delicious bed.

downtown YWCA saturday morning. pulled a deltoid doing incline-presses, then saw yaki walking down nicollet with a cigarette and a latte. he decided to stop in front of the glass to point and laugh at my ass on the elliptical .  rolled home for a haircut @ aveda. every year I manage to end up at the aveda institute on halloween.  if you've never been...imagine all the apple valley college drop-out cuties that work there dressed as sexy cats, and sexy angels, and sexy cheerleaders, and sexy...um, hairstylers. I kept my eyes on the rake and hoped the girl cutting my hair had been there for more than 3 weeks (she hadn't). for $12, I can wait for it to grow out.

packer's sunday at home. made a beet salad for lunch. first time I've gotten dre to like beets. I am sure it had something to do with adding lots of this. enjoyed the win, then went to dinner at jp bistro for half-priced wine night with the demerits.

totally looking forward to thanksgiving with the eastcoasters and gerg and marie, should be a delight!

youtube mania!

david letterman sorta hands bill o'reilly his ass

fedde le grand makes me want to put my hands up for detroit (nsfw)

as promised, today is "links to dope mixes given to me by other people I intend to pass off as my own discoveries" day.

by far my favorite group of mixes are those by boston's dj c @ mashit. all of the mixes are tight and run the gamut from minimal dubby sounds to ragga to early 90s clubby to protest hip-hop to grimey/dubwise/crunk terrific mix of sounds and genre's, and all good tracks.

my next fave has been dj kano. no, not THE kano. similar to dj c, dj kano mixes styles that appear on the surface to have little business being next to each other.  drone with baile with drum & bass with metal with whatever wolf eyes is. i recommend the massif mix and el kano shafts grindcore, hot music.

i'm fairly sure ackerman  suggested at least one of the above, however this one was either ack or seville. I don't recall. weareie are a group of djs from dublin that tear shit up. mostly dub/dancehall and drum & bass. the sovereign rhythms 1 & 2  mixes are composed of old hardcore & drum&bass. vol 1 and vol 2 of the inna dancehall mixes are tight as well.

ack also hooked up this SWEET dub/roots/ska/reggae mix by dagobah soundsystem. he'd also linked to one of the best rare/roots mixes, 36 big ones, however I cannot find where it came from (ack, if you're reading this...hook me up!)

the hotshit? blentwell yall! recognize. honest. hot. mixes.

finally, you can get grateful dead sets on the internet...MAN

dre and I went to a welcoming/kickoff party for the timberwolves last night (because dre buys group tickets during the season, we get to drink for free and meet the team president and what appear to be 20 year old account reps). good time. free beer. tried to figure out why the president of the team is scottish.  met this guy that looked like ben affleck from iowa. watched the first half of the game (v bulls. last preseason game of the season...the only person breaking a sweat was the sweat mopper). left at halftime and went to gluek's for beers then missed our bus and ended up people-watching for a half hour. and reading the new citypages with a huge article about the world's stringiest, gristliest dogs.

scotch is getting diluted , must run to save it. peas and carrots.

walked down to ne bulldog tonight with rockers and accomplished graphical-designers timmy and megan. had a couple beers and shot the shit about new jobs and wedding planning (tim & megan's nuptials to take place at –no clearance to give away the venue- rad local spot on august 11th). we were joined by ne superfolks todd and michele who had been out at alma celebrating their 3 year wedding anniversary (send them a congrats-email folks!). lots of PR discussion and a massive debate on breakfast cereals (perhaps more on that later).

lowdown on the ne bulldog: really no major structural changes from the old boom/oddfellows setup. same two-sided bar as was in boom, only without the suspended track lighting. the two major differences being, the inclusion of about 10 more flat tvs than they probably need and the section of the space that had been oddfellows is now another bar area (really no changes to the bar back there). also, less comfortable, more hetero (duh).

highlights:

shuffleboard! (somehow it keeps track of the score we think)

bigger menu, (including hand-cut fries)

wines by the glass

a more extensive belgian beer selection (bottled)

less, uh,  intimidating bathroom lighting fixtures (male)

tvs not playing sex and the city

lowlights:

drinks are weaker than boom's

oddfellows had good food (if a bit overpriced for the neighborhood)

too many damn tv's everywhere

no pretty boys to look at and wish you were gay for

the chips are not seasoned

my maxwell polish was not as good as the uptown bulldog's

oddly high chach factor for ne

all –in-all the place looks the same. good amount of potential. by far the 2nd biggest all-indoor bar in ne (suzi's patio eclipses all when it comes to total square footage, and nyes is HUGE). I will be surprised if they can pay the rent with the business they might generate during weeknights. we've lived in this neighborhood for almost 3 years, the bars do not get busy on weeknights like they do in uptown. my big wish is that this starts a happy hour war with whitey's across the street as we have no good specials around here. i also hope it encourages whitey's to buy a bigger tv before college basketball season starts.

great idea of the night: lucozade and vodka (presented by tim)

as promised, here is a link to some funny-ass shit: fensler film's gi joe psas (an oldy but a goody)

also this week: new beck record is ok, not great.  mates of state: bring it back: terrific car music. mastadon: still rules for workouts.

tomorrow:  links to free mixes given to me by friends I intend to pass-off as my own discoveries.

driving home from work today, couldn't help but notice that the ne bulldog is open and kickin' for the first time. wall to wall inside, but oddly no smokers out front. I suspect free beer. or zombies. could be zombies. I think I'll call fellow st anthony west denizen timmy-o to see if he's down for a pint of belgian.

speaking of the mdlwst boys, if either of you reading this needs design work done, I could not recommend them more highly. tim & ben were the hands behind the a+d mpls reception invites. ben has his own portfolio site set up, please note the vanilla ice commission.

attitude city has released a new mix of their crucial podcast titled "shake your rhombus". these bastards find the best dance records. always a killer party mix and for all you ipod users, get on their podcast. if you were at the a+d reception/event/drinking contest you would have heard these guys rocking us until the lights came up. perhaps you recall "face down, ass up" being danced to by my mother-in-law. you can't HELP but get down.

so snow season is upon us, and ski/snowboard/toboggan season with it. with that in mind, i'd like to present my best snowboarding videos of all time of the week list: 1) absinthe presents more. that's it. watch that one. it's sick. I have it ripped to xvid if you want to watch it at my place. bring beer. seriously boss backcountry/free-ride stuff and urban "why the hell would you snowboard in a parking lot?" stuff.

dre comes back from LA tonight, so I only have 6 more hours to drink all the beer left and do 3 days worth of dishes. but it's MNF tonight.  someone is testing me.

new music today. mad al noche had found and suggested the new project by a favorite of mine, erlend oye, called the whitest boy alive. a good record that is rough around the edges and sounds exquisitely DIY.  think erlend oye singing over police demo tapes circa 1977. potential.

grabbed kano's beats and bars which is a little raw (lyrically) for me. I was expecting a bit more grimey shit, this is like dizzee rascal meets lil' wayne (only less grimey and not fucking lame). and when did african united kingdomians start using the "n" word? its distracting. still, good music to,  I don't know, drink lucozade to.

BEST pickup of the week however has to be pitchfork's recent favorite junior boys: so this is goodbye. honestly terrific "electronic" music composition and song writing. impressed. I was apprehensive in downloading it as the last thing I downloaded on pitchfork's recommendation was night ripper, which is good, but the review does not mention it is a golden-girls-theme-meets-marky-mark-(i am not kidding)-mashup-record. not bad but it just makes me love the first avalanches album that much more (thanks seville).

and what the hell is this? I haven't pulled any down, but it appears to be various u.s. mls club soccer teams matching up with musicians to make mashups. but that can't be right though can it? i'll let you know as adidas tells me they are going to go ahead and keep me in the know, cuz  i've got it like that.

went to london with deedot. took some pictures, made some movies.

packers won today...which is BOSS! looks like the o-line figured out how to defend the blind side this week before it cost them another game. the answer appeared to come in the way of triple-teaming jason taylor, who, if you didn't hear jc pearson mention, is a supernatural hybrid defensive player from the future (i know deedot heard it). have yet to read-up on the condition of my new favorite player of the season of all time, however last news was they were taking him for x-rays on his balls.

i'm sure wiscomptonites know what's up by now, but the packer news media blackout continues here in the MPLS-STPL. I blame belinda jensen and her anti-packer agenda EVEN THOUGH she is a UW graduate. I also think it is garbage that the word "talent" appears in the link to her bio. speaking of local news people,  I have a total crush on karen leigh. I watch her every morning between WTR (every morning from 5-6c on USA)  and sportscenter. anyway, the packers are great and whatever team you like is dumb unless it is the packers in which case they are still great.

lets see, what else.

ate at  town talk diner on wednesday with awesome friends gerg and marie, both of whom were decked to the max for the PR finale (more on that in a bit). both got a hella-outfit-nod from hunky waiter who was cruising gerg but got cock-blocked by marie telling him about her sweet tim gunn autographed shirt! scandalous! I had the new york strip with autumn vegetable terrine and creamed spinach, it was fantastic. gerg had the porked-chop which I tried and was also very good. marie and andrea had some vegetarian shit by which I cannot abide and will discuss no further. had a 40 of high life served tableside which was funny. also got to see old school friend kim tong who was working there. we must go back.

i'm not going to go too into PR, but if you love the show and haven't seen this you MUST. I loved michael all season, he showed how green he was at fashion  week, he still rules. uli and jeffrey both had solid collections. I liked uli's better but jeffrey's was more cohesive and he has a neck tattoo. laura should have been kicked-off on whatever week sweet sweet alison was eliminated.

went with drunkenmaster jaypee to the adam beyer show at foundation on thursday night after some sweet mexican food from la tortuga. i love that place, but as jana pointed out, I leave smelling like a deep fryer. i think the hood above the grill is just for show. adam was bangin' but i have become too old for dancing on a weeknight. still fun.

ok, that's it for now, I am tired and have a cold and have to go into work early tomorrow.
